These pressures are likely to rise with new and more effective screening kit and the compliance is expected to be higher because of single sample positives produced by those tests. The work load will increase even further with an uptake in screening amongst a wider age range.
Additionally with increasing awareness in the general population, two week wait referrals are on rise in various specialities and with the new faster diagnosis 28 day standard coming into effect in 2020 putting tremendous pressures on current NHS resources. Waiting list for elective surgical procedures is also challenging issue in most NHS trusts in part impacted by diagnostic pressures.
